BP Troubles Puts Contractor Pensions At Risk

With BP’s share price still plummeting in the wake of its failed well-capping in the Gulf of Mexico, many pension funds have concerns over their sizeable investments in BP stock.

It is estimated that BP shares provide £1 in every £7 paid in dividends by FTSE-100 companies. With the taxes payable on these huge dividend payouts, BP is also a major provider of revenues to the UK Treasury, having paid around £750 million in UK corporate taxes with another £135 million expected to be paid in production taxes in the UK.

On the back of the crisis faced by BP and recent banking crashes, FairPensions, a lobby organisation, said investors needed to pay more attention to the wider risks faced by the companies they put their money into whether they are oil groups or banks.
