The jobbing freelance contractor working in IT, especially with experience of the gaming industry, might well consider a move to Scotland in the light of two new developments.

The Bank of Scotland’s latest Report on Jobs shows that the IT and computing sector experienced an especially strong surge in demand during January, outstripping other sectors in the pace of its increase.  This places it second in the demand list, standing just behind nursing, medical, and just ahead of the blue-collar sector.  In fact, all eight sectors of the Scottish economy showed signs of healthy improvement, recording rises in demand for both temporary and permanent staff.  According to the Bank of Scotland’s Chief Economist, Donald MacRae, the Scottish economy recovered substantially from the ill effects of the winter bad weather the previous year.  The report’s Demand Barometer reached its highest reading in 37 months in January, after having risen consistently over each of the previous five months.

However, anyone seeking contractor jobs in the gaming industry may also be heartened by a new announcement from Outplay Entertainment, which plans to create 150 new jobs in Dundee in the coming year.  These will include roles for technical developers, producers and artists.

The company’s founders, Richard and Douglas Hare, will work with recruiters to appoint the needed staff. They are also hoping to attract new recruits from the University of Albertay, which is renowned for its supply of cutting-edge gaming talent.  The company’s decision to launch in Dundee, in fact, was strongly influenced by the area’s widely appreciated skilled workforce and reputation for competitiveness, Chief executive Douglas Hare told the Financial Times.
