Public Liability Insurance protects companies and their workers against compensation claims by third parties for damage or injuries caused by workers.
Public Liability insurance is different to Employers Liability Insurance, in that it protects against claims made by members of the public or other businesses, but not for claims by employees. While public liability insurance is voluntary, it is generally a contractual requirement to have suitable Public Liability cover in place when working on contract.
An example of a claim on a Public Liability Insurance policy would be, if a Contractor left a tool on the floor and a member of the public tripped over it and injured themselves, they would make a claim for compensation against the Contractor’s policy.
As a Freelance Contractor, the contract you are working on may stipulate that you must have a certain level of Public Liability Insurance, you should therefore ensure that the cover that you purchase as a Sole Trader or a Limited Company owner, or if you are working as an employee of an Agency or an Umbrella Company that the cover that they hold is appropriate for both the contractual requirements and for your specific occupation, as some policies exclude certain professions.
